大気の川｜Atmospheric River

久しぶりに朝、テレビ地上波のローカルニュースを見ると、「アトモスフェリック・リバー」（Atmospheric River｜大気の川）という用語を連発していた。大晦日と、新年早々にカリフォルニアに「記録的な」豪雨をもたらした現象が、また同じ場所に風雨をもたらすという。

「大気の川」というのは、大気中の水蒸気を多く含んだ帯状の部分のことをいうらしく、最近になって明らかになってきた現象で、まだ研究途上にある。これが、「川」と呼ばれるのには、地上の大河に匹敵する大量の水分が含まれているからだという。

大晦日には、ニュースも見ないで、部屋に閉じこもって雨音だけを聞いていたが、どこか幼い頃に体験した「梅雨」時の雨の降り方に似ていると感じた。その梅雨や、最近よく聞く「線状降水帯」というのも、この「大気の川」がその原因になっているという研究もある。

アメリカ西海岸の冬に降る雨には、ハワイの辺りからアメリカ西海岸にもたらされるということで、もともと「パイナップル・エクスプレス」（Pineapple Express）という呼び名がある。この名前も、ニュースで連発されている。この「大気の川」がその原因にあたるとみられる。

大気の川があるからといって、それがいつも必ずしも豪雨につながるわけではない。当然ながら、水蒸気は湯気や雲と違って目には見えないため、異様な雲の流れを見れるわけでもない。温度や気圧の変化、地形など（だと思うが）、他の要因が加わってはじめて降雨になるそうだ。そのため、直前になるまで予報は難しいという。

毎年、同じ場所に同じくらいの降雨をもたらすわけでもなく、この雨自体は、悪者ではない。この冬の降雨がないと、残念ながらカリフォルニアは水不足の夏を過ごすことになる。

これから数日間はまた「システム」（（Low-pressure）System｜低気圧）や「コールド・フロント」（Cold Front｜寒冷前線）が次々に通過して、長雨になりそうである。
